The Department of State Security (DSS) has again claimed
that there are plots to destabilise Nigeria. Spokesman of the service, Peter
Afunanya, made this known in a statement on Monday, July 27. The DSS is known
for raising such alarms in the past with nothing to show for it subsequently.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has again, informed
Nigerians that there is a plot by some prominent personalities and groups to
destabilise the country.
The DSS said the unpatriotic groups are taking advantage of
the existing security situations in some parts of the country to carry out
their plan. Spokesman of the service, Peter Afunanya, made this known in a
statement on Monday, July 27.
He said the secret police would not fold its arm to watch
anyone, no matter how highly placed, to cause a breakdown of law and order in
the country.
To ensure the safety of all and the peace and stability of
the country, Afunaya said the DSS was working with relevant authorities to
ensure that the sinister objective is not achieved. Like in the past, the DSS
spokesman failed to mention the names of those behind the threats or the modus
operandi of their plans.
Part of the statement read: ‘‘The service reiterates its
commitment to the internal security of Nigeria and will, within the confines of
the law, decisively deal with planners of the mayhem. ‘‘Law-abiding citizens
are urged to go about their normal businesses and disregard the antics of
agents of destabilisation. ‘‘‘They should, however, avail the service and
related agencies with useful information about the activities of criminals and
groups intent on instigating violence in the country.’’
The DSS is known for raising such alarms in the past with
nothing to show for it subsequently.
Many Nigerians the secret police is a tool in the hands of
the government in power to intimidate the opposition and defenceless citizens.
Over the years, the DSS itself has been used by successive governments to
plunge the nation into palpable tension.
In the present administration, the DSS has invaded the
National Assembly and the quarters of Federal High court judges in Abuja with a
commando approach.
Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reacted to a
call for a military coup by the national chairman of National Democratic Party
(NDP), Chidi Chukwuanyi.
Chukwuanyi had in an interview with a national newspaper on
Sunday, July 26, said: “Nigeria needs a Rawlings now.” “The state of corruption
in the country calls for the replication of the Ghanaian experience under
former President Jerry Rawlings in Nigeria,” the NDP chairman added.

Defence Media Operations, Major-General John Enenche on Monday, July 27, stated
that the comment is inciting and instigative. “What Chidi Chukwuanyi is calling
for is a combination of unpopular acts of insurrection and mutiny, which cannot
be taken for granted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the DHQ said.
