The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has once again warned
and distanced itself from the crime wave bedevilling the region, saying it has
never been part of the insecurity.
It also warned those using its name to commit crimes to stop
in their own interest.
The secessionist group said it cannot harm the people for
whom security and safety the Eastern Security Network (ESN) was established.
In a statement signed by its media and publicity secretary,
Emma Powerful, IPOB recalled that it formed and inaugurated ESN to checkmate
terrorists’ activities in the region and vowed never to get involved in such
evil and wicked acts as kidnapping for ransom.
The statement said the group is working towards exposing to
the public those behind the ongoing criminalities in Anambra, Enugu and Imo
States.
“Those behind these devilish activities are neither IPOB nor
ESN members as always, unfortunately, “alleged” and we cannot allow them to
succeed in our land”, it said.
It named some persons and gangs in the South East who it
said were the brains behind the kidnappings and killings there.
Those persons it said were masterminds of kidnappings in and
around Nnewi North Local council, Nnewi South, Ekwulobia, Aguata and other
places in Anambra State.
It said the named people joined IPOB “with very dubious and
criminal intents.
“However our well tested and trusted guiding principles
exposed their ulterior intent and motive and unworthy of being part of the
noble IPOB family and were therefore expelled to avoid contamination with
disciplined members of IPOB”, it said.
DAILY POST recalls that the southeast has in recent times
been enmeshed in crimes, especially kidnapping of ordinary and high-profile
personalities.
The usual sit-at-home directive by IPOB is also not helping
matters, as much as the southeast governors have been trying to break the
directive, it appears to be getting no headway as the people comply with it out
of fear of the repercussion.
