Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the
Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said referendum made the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar a Nigerian.
Ejimakor also noted that Atiku’s emergence as Nigeria’s
president should be anchored on a referendum.
He explained that Adamawa State where Atiku hailed from
became part of Nigeria through referendum.
He made the remark while backing the United Nations, UN,
directive that Kanu’s call for a referendum was legitimate.
In a series of tweets, Ejimakor said the challenge with
Kanu’s agitation for referendum was a misguided militarist response.
He stressed that Nigeria gained Adamawa and lost Southern
Cameroon through a referendum.
Ejimakor also listed countries like Eritrea, Kosovo, and
South Sudan that emerged through referendum.
According to Ejimakor: “Nigeria gained Adamawa and lost
Southern Cameroon through referendum and nobody was detained, killed or
extraordinarily renditioned.
“It is referendum that made Abubakar Atiku a Nigerian and
which may as yet make him President. It’s through referendum that Midwest
Region came into being in 1964.”
Ejimakor said the “militarist” response by the Nigerian
Government has validated the agitation for a referendum.
“The problem is not the separatist agitation, IPOB or Nnamdi
Kanu. The problem is the misguided militarist response to it which, instead of
containing it, is actually validating the agitation and convulsing Southeast
and Nigeria to boot,” he added.
Kanu and IPOB have been agitating for a referendum that
would lead to the actualization of Biafra.
