Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says there is a memo
before him to bring back all the campuses of the Rivers State University back
to the main campus in Port Harcourt.
The governor who revealed this when he received a delegation
of Kalabari traditional rulers at the Government House on Tuesday, criticised
his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, for creating different campuses of the
university.
The Wike administration had decentralized the university
campuses, saying his decision was to attract development to the areas.
Not much is being heard about the new campuses created in
Emohua, Ahoada and Etche.
Addressing the traditional leaders, Governor Fubara stated
that the campuses spread across the state do not have a sustainable plan.
He assured the Kalabari traditional rulers that he would
work on their request to establish a higher institution in their area, focused
on a specialized discipline and in synergy with the federal government.
Fubara said, “Regarding the tertiary institution, it will
not be like the campuses that were created but are not self-sustaining.
“We will study it carefully, and whatever we establish must
be self-sustaining.
“It is not just about creating a tertiary institution; it
has to be one that, while receiving government support, can also attract
federal attention. It must be specialized to stand the test of time.
He added, “As of today, there is a memo recommending that
those campuses be consolidated back into the main campus of the university.
Ours will not follow that path.”
Fubara also promised to complete ongoing projects and
undertake new ones in the three LGAs of Degema, Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru that
make up the Kalabari Ethnic Group.
