The Directorate of States (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed reports linking four men recently arrested and arraigned in court to the organisation, insisting that none of them has ever been a member of IPOB or its affiliated structures.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday, October 2, 2026, and signed by the DOS Press Secretary, Dr C. Okadigbo, on behalf of the leadership of the organisation under Mazi Chukwukadibia Edoziem.
The individuals named in the statement are Michael Okafor; Chinedu Joseph Chukwudozie, also known as Kante; Chibunna Olisa; and Chigozie Olisa, also known as Ability.
The IPOB leadership the DOS described reports identifying the suspects as members of the organisation as “false” and an attempt to associate IPOB with criminal activities.
According to the statement, the four individuals are “unknown” to the movement and have never belonged to any IPOB or Eastern Security Network (ESN), IPOB family unit or Zone , either in Nigeria or abroad.
The DOS further maintained that IPOB operates a structured membership system and said the organisation does not harbour criminals.
The statement also accused Nigerian security agencies of repeatedly associating suspects arrested over alleged criminal activities with IPOB or ESN. The DOS said that such claims were aimed at damaging the organisation's reputation before the courts, the Nigerian public and the international community.
However, the organisation challenged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to produce verifiable evidence establishing a connection between the four suspects and IPOB.
The DOS specifically called for the production of membership records, registration details, meeting attendance records or other authentic documentary evidence that could demonstrate that the individuals belonged to IPOB.
“We challenge the Nigeria Police/DSS to produce any evidence, registration, meeting attendance, or any authentic material proof linking these individuals to IPOB,” the statement said.
The organisation urged members of the public and the media to exercise caution over reports linking the suspects to IPOB, while also calling on the court to disregard what it described as an incorrect attribution of IPOB membership.
The DOS insisted that the criminal proceedings involving the four individuals have no connection with IPOB and reiterated the organisation's stated position that it is a peaceful self-determination movement advocating for the interests of the Biafran people through lawful means.
The statement concluded by saying that IPOB would continue to publicly reject allegations that criminals or individuals unknown to the organisation were members of the movement.
